The Memphis YOMCA must have been in shock when the word came down they were being selected for one of the final spots in the 16 and under portion of the prestigious Nike Peach Jam tourney in Augusta.

The team had really not played together and was being assembled for this tourney with hopes of putting on a good show in front of a magnitude of the top coaches in the country.

A good showing is that what we said; let's just say they did much more than this.

Monday afternoon produced a victory then Tuesday afternoon brought their record to 2-0.

A win against the high powered Boo Williams Summer League squad would push them into a semi-final game with a chance to advance to the title contest.

Martavious Newby (Melrose) scored 24 points including four 3's as the YOMCA bested Boo 80-72.

Newby was incredible scoring from all areas of the floor while Jarnell Stokes (Memphis Central) took his place on the block and promptly scored 20 points and grabbed a dozen boards in the victory.

Kodarrio Fleming (Ridgeway) was especially active in this game scoring 15 points including some tough inside buckets as the YOMCA came out of the second half roaring scoring 16 straight to break a 35 all tie at the half.

The win brought the YOMCA into first round playoff action against a very talented BABC squad.

The Y held a 38-28 halftime lead but could not hold onto it as BABC rallied late to slip by with a 67-62 victory.

Fred Yarbrough (Dyer County) was high man with 19 points and played outstanding defense throughout the event.

Newby added 16 and Fleming finished with 11, while Stokes nabbed 15 caroms to go with his six points.
