YOMCA Memphis Bulldogs Capture 16 and Under State 90-65

nick mason.jpg

The YOMCA Memphis Bulldogs were out to prove something this past weekend.

The 16 and under state was just the right venue for that to happen.

Tyler Stone (Memphis Central) and Ronald Brown (Raleigh-Egypt) led a very balanced Y attack and helped them swing past the Mid-State Ballerz 90-65 to capture the 'ship in very convincing fashion.

Stone and Brown are back with the Y and all is right with the world. Coach Spencer Johnson is one of the special guys in this arena and his squad is disciplined and plays well together.

Stone especially played superb this weekend showing he is ready for a breakout July.

Nick Mason (Fairley) continues his torrid summer pace and steady Julian Burton (White Station) is the leader for this squad.

For the Ballerz, Cordaro Williams (Liberty Tech) is making the most of his bright summer, shooting the lights out of every gym he enters.

Travai Pryor (Austin East) was solid for the Ballerz playing with his age group this weekend. His effort and desire continue to be at peak form right now. Julian Reese (Brentwood Academy), Tarius Johnson (Liberty Tech) and Kaneal Windom (JCM) all had good effort this weekend.

The Ballerz advanced to the title game with a 87-69 defeat of Team Nashville. Freddie Lee (McGavock) played inspired hoops for the Nashville bunch this weekend and was mentioned to me by more than one source.

The Y's journey to the title was a 71-50 victory against the Tennessee Stormriders. Robert Boyd (Fulton) continues to impress with his scoring ability this summer. Caleb Barrett (Knoxville West) also had a strong weekend.

Ballerz Take 17 And Under State……”Stat-Man” Shines

travai pryor.jpg

Nathan Parker (Bearden) is a baller.

True statement literally and figuratively as the 6'4 rising senior dropped 18 points to lead the Mid-State Ballerz past the Memphis YOMCA 55-46 in the 17 and under AAU state tournament.

Mid-State coming off a great showing at the Bob Gibbon's Tournament of Champions may not have played with the same fervor as the money tourney's but turned up the intensity when the 'ship was on the line.

The Ballerz had a big struggle in the semis just slipping past the Franklin Rage 65-62.

The Y, playing without Leslie McDonald (Braircrest Christian), were led by Ian Clark (Germantown), Johnny Williams (Braircrest Christian), and Ferrakohn Hall (White Station).

Joining Parker in the scoring column for the Ballerz, Travai Pryor (Austin East) and high school teammate Chase Jones (Austin East) both with 9 points. Pryor continues to play at a level we all hoped he would ascend to. His maturation is obvious and his future is limitless if he continues down this path.

Parke finished as the Ballerz leading scorer for the event but was closely followed by Skylar McBee (Grainger), who averaged double figures and Deonte Alexander (Glencliff), also finished with double digit outputs for the tourney. Special mention for the efforts of Davell Lloyd (Westview) and Chance Jones (Austin East).

In the third place game the Nashville Gators took advantage of the Franklin Rage's expenditure of energy against the Ballerz and decively won the third place game. Brenden Connolly (Father Ryan) showed he was a player to reckon with scoring a bundle of inside hoops and causing havoc on the defensive end. His stock is certainly on the rise.

Other players who shined over the three day tourney include:

Michael Young (Franklin)

Steady is his moniker and heady is his game. Young scored huge buckets at crucial times and proved to be a match-up problem when he moves well without the ball. He is in for a big summer if his play stays at this high level.

Austin Pace (Franklin)

Bundle of energy and high intensity make him a contributor. Pace proved steady all weekend scoring when the opportunity was there and giving his opponent fits on the defensive end of the floor.

Marquis Rudolph (Clarksville Northwest)

Smooth operator continues to keep his summer running along just fine. Scored well including 30 against the Rage in a pool play game.

Memphis YOMCA 15’s Grab Silver at Nike MDC

How ironic is this little fact.

In the two biggest most prestigious Memorial Day tourneys the 15 and under squads from the Bluff City came home sporting silver.

As previously reported the M33M Ballerz grabbed the silver at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions losing in the final to the very tough Ohio Basketball Club.

Down in Nashville the Memphis YOMCA 15's did themselves proud finishing 5-1 on the tourney before falling to a tough Houston Hoops squad in the title game.

The wins give the Y a 17-2 mark on the season and project them as one of the top teams in nation. Shining throughout this past weekend were Chris Jones (Melrose), Wayne Martin (Mississippi), Andre Hollins (White Station) and Nino Johnson (Melrose).

Jones is stone cold demon on the floor hitting shots from everywhere and has not one ounce of fear in his game. Hollins continues to make a push for the top player in this class with his hustle and hihg basketball IQ. Martin is a pure powerhouse and already a coveted prospect.

The talk from onlookers was the emergence of the 6'6 Johnson. Getting better with every game this youngster has put himself on the recruiting lists of most schools in the Southeast.

Down in the 16 and under division the YOMCA finished 2-2 after playing in an extremely tough pool. Coaches praised the play of a relative unknown Montez Pfeiffer (Southwind). Look for major action and traffic jams on the road leading to Southwind in the next couple of seasons. Steady is what Julian Burton (White Station) is known for. Running the show and getting everyone involved is job #1 for the precocious point man.

Special mention to the efforts of Rashad Harris (Raleigh-Egypt), who is ready to explode on the scene and the steady contribution of my man Nicholas Mason (Fairley).

In the 17's the YOMCA finished 2-2 after being shacked up with Athletes First in pool play. Ian Clark (Germantown) continues to turn heads with his efforts from the outside. His stock is on the rise so mid-majors it looks like a good time to buy.

Also drawing praise for their efforts include Leslie McDonald (Braircrest Christian), Farrahkon Hall (White Station) and Cordario Macklin (Ridgeway).

Travelers 16’s Reach Final Eight…Herman Goes Off

stephen cook.jpg

As we honor the men and women i the Armed Forces with this Memorial Day holiday lets not forget whats important in the world today. God bless them everyone.

Brandon Herman (Grace Baptist).

Every week we write about the Travelers 16 and under squad with a mention about the rising Chattanooga junior. This week the Nike world got a load of the hot scoring youngster and he did not disappoint.

Leading his squad to the final eight and an overall 2-2 record, Herman exploded for 43 points in a victory over the Metro Hawks and is quietly inching his way up the ladder in the Class of 2010 rankings.

Also drawing praise for their effort this weekend Tyler Hood (Lenoir City), Fred Sturdivant (Brainerd), Dwight Tarwater (Knoxville Webb) and DeAngelo Williams (Spring Hill).

The Travelers were a team looking for energy as the tourney moved along and it was provided in the form of Linwood Holloway (Knoxville Central). His high energy defense and hustle makes him the perfect catalyst for the role of leader. His game is coming along nicely as he works hard to make himself a better player.

In the 15 and under division the Travelers finished the tourney at 1-3 including a tough one point loss. Without further ado the qworld got a chance to see the emergence of Mr. Lester Wilson (Knoxville Carter). The athletic rising sophomore finally put things together in front of scouts, media and fans. His game took off and he drew some national praise for his efforts as well. With the huge July period around the corner this is the perfect time to be peaking.

Also playing with emotion were Dajon Porter (Brainerd) and Brandon Lopez (Austin East).

Down in the 17 and iunder diviison the competition was still and furious. The Ravs finished at 1-3 but got inspired efforts from the likes of Stephen Cook (Chattanooga Christian), Joe Meady (Knoxville Carter), James Gallman (Knoxville Fulton) and the rising junior wonder twins Emmanuel Andrews (Shelbyville) and Jalen Steele (Knoxville Fulton).

One has to mention the efforts of rising junior Robert Wade (Maplewood), who was the emotional inspiration for the teams win with a monsterous windmill that not only left the crowd but everyone in gym in awe of his raw athletic ability.

M33M Grabs TOC Silver….Thomas and Parks Named All-Tournament

It was dejavu all over again as the M33M Memphis 15's had another opportunity to run through the Bob Gibbon's Tournament of Champions field without a hitch.

Last season led by Tim Peete (Memphis Central) and Mardracus Wade (Mitchell) the boys captured the trophy and it looked like more hardware for another year.

Running through pool play at 3-0 the Ballerz handled a tough Playaz squad in the quarterfinals. Next a nice win against a very good United Celtics squad set the tone for a battle with arch nemesis the Ohio Basketball Club.

The championship clash was a rematch of last season AAU national final.

The Ballerz held tight but came up short in the end falling 60-45 and bringing home the silver.

Adonis Thomas (Melrose) led the scoring with 10 points and for his effort was named to the 15 and under All-Tournament squad.

Thomas was fantastic all week averaging around 13 per game for the tourney. Also making the All-Tournament squad and the leading scorer for the Ballerz at 14.6, Ray Parks (St. George's).

Parks has trimmed his build and played hard, quick and tough the entire weekend.

Other Ballerz who shined were Joseph Northington (Mississippi), Marvin Williams (White Station), Darious Paige (Southwind) and  Chris Crawford (Sheffield).

Classic Battles Highlight 17 and Under Runs at TOC

casey prather.jpg

It was so close you could taste it.

Pool winners, National Bracket. The drama played out just like you'd hoped it would.

Mid-State Ballerz slammed through their pool at 3-0, while the Nashville Celtics at 2-1 captured the top spot in their pool as well. For their effort the Ballerz drew the tourney's overall top seed the Indiana Elite and the Celtics met D-1 Sports.

What should have happened did'nt..what could have happened we can opnly speculate.

With so many top level guys the Inidiana Elite were preparing for a future date with the big powers like the Atlanta Celtics or Team Breakdown who was this team from Tennessee standing in the way of their proposed destiny.

I bet the Elite know who the Ballerz are now.   Final Score Indiana Elite 70 Mid-State Ballerz 68.

Close till the closing seconds the Ballerz used the savvy play of Deonte Alexander (Glencliff) and Skylar McBee (Grainger) outside and Chase Jones (Austin East), Travai Pryor (Austin East) and Sam Watson (Farragut) inside to scare the life of not only the Elite but all the media, fans, and onlookers crowded around Court #1 in the Dean Smith Center.

Over in the practice facility a similiar scenario was taking place. The Nashville Celtics get ready for tip-off against what many people in the business have as the top player in the country D-1 Sports super guard John Wall.

Casey Prather (Jackson Northside) had moments of pure athletic brilliance, while Kentucky bound Jon Hood (Kentucky) and soft shooting Drew Barham (CBHS) made sure the boys and fans in the Carolinas knew they were for real falling 68-67 in a very tough game.

Prather was magical for a 6 minute stretch and Barham put Mr. Wall to the test with his length and improved first step.

The Tennessee dream match-up did not materialize but like a proud father I hoped the dream would come true.

Enough can't be said for the steady play of Alexander throughout the weekend. No longer hindered by the jinx (inside joke) this Nashville native was great. Defending like his life depending on it and showing leadership ksills from out front; as well as, knocking down jumpers and quick bursts to the bucket. McBee showed he could play with anyone in the country, knocking down tough runners and deep threes.

Pryor played like I have never seen him play. His effort was unmatch and the light seemed to come on for him in this event, future is so bright if he keeps this pace. Chase was the top scorer with 19 in the quarterfinal win and Watson grabbed tough caroms and converted big baskets all weekend.

The M33M squad also advanced to bracket play in the select diviison losing by one to Meanstreets. Sampson Carter (Ridgeway) had a solid tourney for the Ballerz., who featured a hodge-podge of players from all over the country.

A tough weekend for the Tennessee YOMCA Tigers as they finished 0-3. The Tigers did'nt play up to their potential and in this environment the consequences are bad losses. Vanderbilt signee John Jenkins (Station Camp) finished the event as one of the top scorers at 16.0 points per game.

In the 16 and under division the Mid-State Ballerz and Nashville Celtics did'nt fair as well. The Ballerz finished 1-2 while the Celts held at 0-3. Cordaro Williams (Liberty Tech) and Tarius Johnson (Liberty Tech) fiished in the scoring leaders at 16.7 and 13.7 respectively.

Ish Sanders (Cleveland) finished as one of the tops scorers as well at 18.0 per game. Cody Henegar (Marion County) also drew some praise for his effort.

Four Named to TOC All-Tournament Team

The conclusion of the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions is always a hectic event for me. The trophy presentation, the naming of the All-Tournament squads and the utter chaos that ensues.

This year four players from Tennessee squads were named to the prestigious glitter squad and they are

Skylar McBee (Grainger) Mid-State Ballerz

First off I am listing McBee at Grainger because as of next year the old Rutledge school will no long be. A new state of the art facility called Grainger High will be erected in its place. Now back to serious matters, McBee was solid. The shooting guard did'nt have his best shooting week but made some nice plays off the dribble and shot well enough to catch the eye of my mentor Bob Gibbons.

Jon Hood (Kentucky) Nashville Celtics

The Kentucky commit was a crucial link in the Celtics winning chain. He gave tough effort, scored off the dribble, knocked down some tough shots and gave effort as he always does. He's a much better athlete than people give him credit for being.

Joe Jackson (White Station) Compton Magic

On loan to Compton this weekend Jackson just did his thing. "The Real Thing" was real finishing as one of the top scorers in the 17 and under division. He played to a standstill with one of the nations best Kenny Boynton and turned many more heads than his slight frame already has.

John Jenkins (Station Camp) Tennessee YOMCA Tigers

"Silk" finished as one of the top scorers in the 17 and under division despite the squads poor showing. Deadly from any spot on the floor with his quick trigger, his off the dribble game has improved.

2008 Bobby Hussey Nike Memorial Day Preview

Huge weekend for hoops in the South with the two major Memorial Day events ready to get underway.

In Nashville the 2008 Bobby Hussey Nike Memorial Day Tournament features two of Tennessee's elite summer programs the Tennessee Travelers and Memphis YOMCA.

In the 17 and under division the Memphis YOMCA drew the unfortunate task of Pool A which will feature among others Athlete's First, Alabama Lasers and Charlotte Royals. The Y has been out of action for a couple of weeks and should be well rested. Led by nationally ranked ballers Leslie McDonald (Braircrest Christian), Ferrakohn Hall (White Station) and Reginald Buckner (Manassas) this group will make a serious run at the crown.

Buckner may or may not be in actio due to his ankle turn at the Challenge of Champions this past weekend.

Moving down to Pool E the Travelers are joined by the St. Luois Eagles, New York Gauchos and Arizona Stars. The Tarvs are getting solid inside work from improving Joe Meady (Knoxville Carter), Kyle Teichman (Brentwood) and Jay Reynolds (Maryville).

Guard play win games and tourney and this event will be no different. Who's playing better than "J-Smooth" Jalen Steele (Fulton) right now. His stock has reached high major interest and with his continued development should become a staple of every high major coaches travel itinerary.

Depth at the backcourt spots is a Traveler tradition with Emmanuel Andrews (Shelbyville), Stephen Cook (Chattanooga Christian) and James Gallman (Fulton).

In the 16 and under division the Travelers will compete in Pool C with the metro Hawks, Team Chandler and Team Texas. Brandon Herman (Grace Baptist) has been a steady force all summer long and will be challenged in this tourney to keep up the high level of play.

Nicholas Mason (Fairley) leads the Y into Pool D action against the likes of Howard Pulley, Georgia Stars and New York Gauchos.

Moving on to the 15 and under division the Memphis YOMCA will compete in Pool C alongside the Illinois Warriors, Team Texas and Georgia Blazers. The Y will be led by emerging stars Andre Hollins (White Station), Chris Jones (Melrose) and Wayne Martin (Arkansas).

Over in Pool D the Travlers will compete aginst Houston Hoops, Howard Pulley and Georgia Elite for advancement to the bracket round. Galen Campbell (Bearden) has been the most consistent of the youngsters but big weekends will be expected from Lester Wilson (Knoxville Carter), Brandon Lopez (Austin East) and Jordan Cross (Sullivan East).

Good luck to everyone and we will give updates as we get them.

2008 Bob Gibbon’s Tournament of Champions Preview

The 2008 TOC brings high school hoops to Tobacco Road with venues at Duke, North Carolina, and North Carolina State among others.

The Volunteer state will be highly represented with four teams in the 17 and under division and two each in the 16's and 15's competing for the coveted gold trophy.

Pool E starts our magical mystery tour with the Tennessee YOMCA Tigers battling the likes of Grassroots Canada, Blessed IJN and the Michigan Hurricanes. The Tigers will welcome back Taverees Jefferson (Ensworth) who will be vital in this tourney. Look for big weekends from Blake Jenkins (Bearden), John "Silk" Jenkins (Station Camp) and Demonte Simpson (Bearden).

Welcome to Pool H, Nashville Celtics. Another weekend with the Worldwide Renegades; as well as, Triple Threat and Cuttino Mobley Philly Pride. The Celtics bring the noise with Drew Kelly (Centennial), Casey Prather (Jackson Northside) and Kentucky commitment Jon Hood (Kentucky). This will lso be my first opportunity to see the heralded newcomer DeAndre Daniels, a Class of 2010 player who plans on moving to Nashville for his junior season.

Mike Miller's M33M battle in Pool J with Ohio Basketball Club, Grand Rapids Storm and the United Celtics. Christian Watford (Alabama) is the marquee attraction but Class of 2010 hoopers like Tim Peete (Memphis Central), Alan Farmer (Cordova) and Masceo Harmon (Memphis Central) give them depth and solid guard play.

Cruising down to Pool P, the Mid-State Ballerz South rumble with Team Final, Illinois Bobcats and New Orleans Jazz. Sam Watson (Farragut) and Travai Pryor (Austin East) provide the only height the Ballerz have but their guard and wing play will be ultra superb led by Deonte Alexander (Glencliff), C.J. Crittendon (Dyer County), Skylar McBee (Grainger) and Nathan Parker (Bearden).

In the 16 and under division Pool B starts with Boo Williams, D-One Sports and the Illinois Wolves. The Mid-State Ballerz will need to be on their game to move on to bracket play with that tough crew. Thomas Greer (West Carroll), Tarius Johnson (Liberty Tech) and Demarius Smith (Kenwood) get the opportunity to make themselves known on a national level in this tourney.

Down in Pool D the Nashville Celtics 16's led by Ish Sanders (Cleveland), Jay Murphy (Bolivar Central) and Cody Henegar (Marion County) take on the tough Grassroots Canada, Richmond Squires and New Jersey Roadrunners.

Down in 15 and under country the Nashville Celtics battle the Playaz, Carolina Raptors and Michigan Mustangs in a very tough pool. The M33M-Memphis squad takes on the New York Gauchos, Birmingham Storm and D-One Sports.

Good luck to everyone and see you in North Carolina.

Stat-Man Named Platinum MVP….All-Tourney Teams Named

Nathan Parker (Bearden) is the Stat-man. During the course of the Challenge of Champions I happened to look over at the scorer's table and noticed Nate doing the clock and score book. I turned to my coaching colleague and stated look Parker is literally the stat-man.

All humor aside Parker had another great weekend scoring, rebounding, blocking some shots and proving to be a match-up nightmare for any defender. His efforts gave him the platinum division MVP award. Other members of the All-Tournament squad include:

5 WHO CAUGHT MY EYE

1. Thomas Greer (West Carroll)

This dude gets better everytime I see him. He is long and much better athletically than people think. He has a deadeye outside shot and plays very hard. Improvement on his lateral and quickness makes him a no-brainer.

2. Kerry Hammonds (Siegel)

As I stated in yesterdays article this kid is really showing improvement. He's got great size and can explode when the opportunity is there. His outside is deft and his energy is high. As he works on his ballhandling and defensive effort the sky is the limit for Mr. Hammonds.

3. Walter Davis (Southwind)

What an athlete. His hops were remarkable and his energy fun to watch. He needs to work on his overall game of course but his ability to explode at a moments notice makes him a very interesting prospect in the Class of 2010.

4. Demarious Smith (Kenwood)

His atletic prowess aside, D.D. is becoming a better basketball player. His explosion is there like a cobra ready to embarrass you but he has learned some of the nuances of the game like boxing out, on the ball defense and scoring from other places beside the paint. Loves his progress.

5. Clarksville's Young Guns

I was highly impressed with the amount of good young talent the city of Clarksville is producing. Players such as Malcolm Smith, Martin Smith, Shawn Kelly, Anthony Hickey, Telvin James, Zavion Williams, Daijon Williams, Demarious Smith, Roger Huntley, Darius Rudolph, and Demetrious Robinson give the city a great foundation for the future.
