Leron Black (White Station) has proven to be a man among boys when facing competition in his own age group. Black, who is playing with the YOMCA, was a monster once again as the Y moved towards a 15 and under AAU State Championship.
The Spartans star was his amazing self scoring 24 points and grabbing 18 boards in a semi-final victory over the YOMCA-Lawson at the 15, but could his absence hurt the YOMCA in their championship game clash with the Tennessee Travelers?
Obviously not, the YOMCA got 22 points from C.J. Anderson (Arlington) and moved past the Travelers 77-61 to grab the title and move onto the 15 and under Nationals later in the summer.
Anderson played brilliantly adding 6 boards and 5 assists to his stat line for the contest. Davell Roby (White Station) punched the clock with 16 markers, 9 caroms and even found time to dish out 4 assists. James Prather (MUS) finished with a double/double scoring 10 points and snatching 12 boards.
Chris Chiozza (Bartlett) was instrumental in the YOMCA success the entire weekend, handling out 8 assists and getting 5 steals in the championship game win. Chiozza did a superb job of keeping the YOMCA error free on offense committing only 5 turnovers in the entire tourney.
Trevon Fields (Science Hill) was the bright star for the Travelers scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 boards in the title game. Will Jennings (Nashville Overton) and Tre Trice (Shelbyville) played well in the championship game loss.
In the semi-final 59-46 victory over Team Cory Brewer, the Travelers were led by Fields, Clay Leatherwood (Gatlinburg-Pittman), Devin Sibley (Karns) and Rob Marberry (FRA).
Sibley went off in pool play scoring 32 points in the Travelers opening game victory.
Keelon Lawson (???) and Alandez Delk (Haywood County) played big as the YOMCA-Lawson defeated Team Cory Brewer in the 3rd place game.
Team Cory Brewer continues to make strides each and every week against better competition. TCB had a nice lead in the semi-final loss to the Travelers but could not hold on at the end. Derrick Spears (MTCS), Jacob Williams (Wilson Central), Ryan Jones (Siegel) and Shadik Spence (Tyner Academy) all played well for Team CB during the event.
