Tier two of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) heads to the Lone star state with action beginning this evening in Houston for our two Tennessee representatives the Tennessee Travelers and the Memphis YOMCA.
The Travelers currently stand at 2-3 in the A Division and have four games against division competition this weekend. On Friday evening the Travs tangle with the 0-5 Baltimore Elite. The Travs will look to their superior guard play with Galen Campbell (Fulton), Dre Mattheiu (Knoxville Central), Rico White (Bearden), Jordan Cross (Sullivan East) and rising sophomore Craig "The Professor" Bradshaw (Greenbrier) to garner that elusive third victory.
Saturday morning the Travelers will tangle with Howard Pulley and their gaudy 4-1 mark. Lester Wilson (Carter) will be called upon the make things happen against their big, rugged Mid-West opponent.
Later in the day, the Wisconsin Elite and their 1-4 mark run up against their Tennessee brethren. Size is always the staple for the Wisconsin squads and the Travelers big men Zach Garland (David Crockett), Jose Agosto (Gatlinburg-Pittman) and Tres Palmer (Powell) will need to be extra large in all facets.
On Sunday the Travelers close with the powerful Albany City Rocks squad and their dynamic 4-1 mark.
From the other end of the state the Memphis YOMCA began their EYBL tour at 1-4 but had still not settled on a complete lineup. That problem seems to have been solved and the boys from the Bluff City are ready to make some noise in Houston.
The Y will open with the 4-1 Howard Pulley squad and with the addition of Jarnell Stokes (Memphis Central) and Wayne Martin (Florida) they have officially solved their inside problems.
On Saturday the morning game features the Baltimore Elite and their 0-5 mark. Never to be on their heels the YOMCA will go to their substantial guards led by Steve Kaspar (ECS), Kerell Davis (Hillcrest), Darious Paige (Southwind), and talented wings Bobby Parks Jr. (Melrose), Johnathan "J3" Williams (Southwind) and super rising 8th grader Leron Black (White Station), whom we got a tremendous look at last weekend at the 14 and under state tournament.
Mean Streets and their 2-3 mark is the opponent on Saturday evening. Telvin Wilkerson (Melrose) will be bright in this one.
Finally on Sunday the YOMCA closes with a very good Louisiana Select squad and their 4-1 mark.
Stay tuned as we will have updates throughout the weekend on the action.
