Welcome to our newest weekly feature. This segment will be called This Week at Tennessee Prep Hoops and will feature what's happening in the hoops world in our state information on upcoming tournaments, commitments, future showcases, unsigned senior events and more.
THIS WEEK AT TENNESSEE PREP HOOPS
So much excitement crammed into the past couple of weeks has kept me on my toes and put many miles on the car as well. The final week of the regular season found me traveling to Maryville on Monday as the Rebels played outstanding ball as they geared up for the district tournament besting Ooltewah. Tuesday my travels took me to Bearden where the Bulldogs hosted a spirited Powell squad. The Panthers played very well led by some very nice play from senior forward Clay Payne (Powell). Friday found me in East Knoxville as the Roadrunners of Austin East played host to their spiritual rivals Chattanooga Howard. Andre Wilson (Austin East) started slow
but came on very strong late, including a rim rocking jam to seal the deal, as AE bested the Hustlin' Tigers. Brandon Walters (Howard) dropped 25 in the close loss.
District play got underway the following week and my first stop was to Seymour High School for the District 2AAA tournament. Morristown West got the early win over city rival Morristown East in the opener by the count of 57-49. The nightcap was a double overtime affair as South Doyle defeated the host squad Seymour 78-77 behind 28 markers from sophomore point guard Jacque Bruce (South Doyle). Gunnar Gibson (Seymour) played very well for the Eagles finishing with 24 points in the narrow defeat.
Tuesday night over to Heritage High School for the District 4AAA tournament early rounds. Farragut, behind a buzzer beating three-pointer from Demarcus Martin (Farragut), out dueled Knoxville Catholic 40-38 to advance to the semi-finals. In the nightcap Lenoir City, behind a stellar 27 point effort from Jordan Hall (Lenoir City),
took care of Knoxville West 67-54.
Destination....Middle Tennessee on Saturday and Smyrna High School was the location for the District 7AAA action. In the opener top ranked Blackman, behind 18 points from Mr. Basketball finalist Darius Thompson (Blackman), bested Oakland 69-57. In the second contest Siegel used a flurry of activity from junior guard Ryan Jones (Siegel) to overcome Lavergne 66-55, Jones, who finished with 26 points, scored 10 straight as the Stars took the lead for the first time in the final quarter.
D1 PLAYERS FROM TENNESSEE
As we do each and every season I will look through the rosters of all the D1 teams from around the country and list the players from the state of Tennessee
who appear on those respective rosters. Some players may be walk-ons or scholarship athletes. Look for that in the coming weeks.
