"Mighty" Chris Jones (Melrose) dropped 19 points and tournament MVP Adonis Thomas (Melrose) sealed the deal with a rousing slam lifting the Memphis Magic Elite to a stunning 75-71 overtime win over the Memphis Idlewild in the 17 and under championship game of the Hoops on the River Basketball Explosion this past weekend.
Idlewild, who took the place of the Birmingham Metro Express in the title game, was not going into this one with any trepidation in the least.
Joining the mighty one in the scoring column, Andre Hollins (White Station) finished with 13 while Thomas and Martavious Newby (BTW) added 10 points apiece.
The dynamic duo of Shaun Gardner (Collierville) and Drew Hildreth (Bolton) led all scorers with 23 and 20 points respectively.
In the 16 and under division the Memphis Magic Elite overcame a deficit for majority of the game before taking advantage of some Memphis Bearcat miscues in the waning minutes of the game and snatching a 81-78 victory from the narrow jaws of defeat.
Leading the Magic in the scorebook was the Ridgeway triumvirate of Adam Weary (Ridgeway), Brandon Lewis (Ridgeway) and Kordario Fleming (Ridgeway).
Lewis dropped 16, with Weary adding 15 and tournament MVP Fleming finished with 10 points.
Terrence Mujahid (Hamilton) led all scorers with 19 points for the Bearcats. Devonte Hampton (Melrose) finished with 14 and Willie Atwood (Melrose) added 11. Alvertis London (Hamilton) had an outstanding weekend finishing with 12 assists in the title game loss.
The Memphis Select scored the go ahead hoop on a bucket by tourney MVP Jahmaih Kelly (Whitehaven) and captured the 15 and under crown with a tight victory over the Golden Trojans.
Kelly finished with 13 points while Myron Hardy (Southwind) added 10 in the victory.
