Here is our weekly list of the top scoring performances in the state, separated by East, Middle and West Tennessee distinction. One of our favorite features as relayed to me by numerous college coaches of all levels.
This is also the forum to announce milestones including 1,000 point scoring efforts and such. Please let me know if we miss any of that information. You can email me at andre@tnprephoops.com.
My intent is to post this list every Monday or Tuesday throughout the season.
This list will encompass the district scoring and the final few regular season games that fell the previous week. The weather has deprived us of several games and kept the time running much longer than we wished to get the district scoring list out.
Nathaniel Collins (Bledsoe County) had what would be known as a "grown man" game in the district championship game against Notre Dame. The Bledsoe County senior torched the nets for 50 points and snatched 21 caroms along the way. His effort lifted the Warriors to victory and a top seed in the Region playoffs that begin tomorrow around the state.
District success can often lead to what they called being on a roll, Teverette Cain (Craigmont) has done exactly that. Cain had a monstrous semi-final game with 26 points in a win over Douglass and then topped himself again with 27 markers in the district title game victory over Sheffield.
Matt Harveston (Marion County) has been a constant fixture on the scoring list all season. Harveston was at his best with the district tourney kicking off these past couple of weeks as he drained a cool 34 points in a quarter-final win over South Pittsburg and followed up with 25 in a loss to Sale Creek. His exploits gave the Warriors a spot in the consolation game of the district where they defeated Lookout Valley and have a region date tomorrow against Boyd Buchanan.
Starting over best describes the season for the Wildcats of Hamilton and the states lone McDonald's All-American participant is determined to keep his squad alive. Dedric Lawson (Hamilton) notched 38 markers in the semi-final win over Memphis Overton then added 30 points in the district final loss to Memphis East. Hamilton will face Southwind in the first round of the region in what should be an epic battle in the Bluff City.
Kaylin Andrade (Austin East) has officially had the best week of his basketball life. The Austin East senior guard had a big week for the Roadrunners. In the season finale he notched 28 against Gatlinburg-Pittman, then opened the district tourney with 31 in a win over Union County, followed up with 26 in the semi-final loss to Fulton. Weather kept the teams from playing their district finals so Austin East advances to the region to meet CAK on Tuesday.
Trey Phifer (Big Sandy) is piling up points in West Tennessee. The junior guard slid past the 1,500 point barrier during district play and still has his Red Devils as they venture to the state's top ranked team in Class A Union City for region action tomorrow evening.
Staying in the junior class, Justin Johnson (Westview) made his presence known with a big week picking up the slack for an injured teammate and carrying the load for the Chargers. Johnson dropped 25 in the semi-final win over Dyersburg then added 26 in the district championship win over Obion County.
Nick Marshall (Lexington) did everything he could do. The Memphis commit managed to scare up 27 points and grab 20 rebounds but it would not be enough as Lexington fell to the defending Class AA state champions Jackson Southside in the district title game.
Maverick Smith (Oakdale) is adding up his accomplishments and the youngster is just closing out his sophomore season. Smith, who would hurl past the 1,000 point barometer, was also instrumental in helping lead the Eagles to their first ever district championship. Congrats guys.
